How it works? FIA European Rally Championship for Tyre Suppliers

The all-new FIA European Rally Championship for Tyre Suppliers is officially under way with the regulations for 2024 now published.

Approved in proposal form by the FIA World Motor Sport Council when it met in Córdoba, Spain in June, the regulations were then agreed by the WMSC’s October gathering before they were added to the FIA Regional Rally Sporting Regulations for 2024, which were published following the WMSC meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, earlier this month.

The FIA European Rally Championship for Tyre Suppliers was born out of a proposal from WRC Promoter, the promotional might behind the ERC, to the Rallies Commission.

It recognises and incentivises tyre company participation in the ERC and will be contested for from the start of the 2024 ERC season by official ERC tyre partners.

The rules are detailed in section 5.1 of the 2024 FIA Regional Rally Sporting Regulations and state: “A nominated tyre supplier may score points with the two best placed Rally2 cars registered in ERC and fitted with its tyres in the final classification of each rally. Additional cars fitted by the same supplier may neither score points nor detract points from other cars”.

The same scoring system used within the overall ERC will be used with all eight 2024 ERC rounds appearing on the schedule of events.

There was a strong level of tyre manufacturer participation in the ERC in 2023 with Hankook, Michelin, MRF and Pirelli signed up as the championship’s official tyre partners. They were all actively engaged in the series by supporting drivers and teams plus ongoing development, albeit on a restricted and sustainable basis.

Michelin, MRF and Pirelli all won ERC events in 2023 with Hankook celebrating success in Junior ERC as the championship’s official tyre provider. Hankook was also an outright podium finisher on Rally Hungary last October.   The 2024 ERC begins with the all-gravel Rally Hungary from 12 - 14 April.
