Super 1600 icons go for ERC Greatest Car votes

Two iconic cars from the FIA European Rally Championship’s legendary Super 1600 era will duel for a place in the ERC Greatest Car quarter-finals today (Friday).

Having banked outright ERC titles, Citroën’s C2 Super 1600 and Renault’s Clio Super 1600 hold a special place in European championship history having thrilled fans as the ERC’s headlining class following its restructuring in 2004.

The Clio S1600 powered Simon Jean-Joseph and Renato Travaglia to back-to-back ERC tittles between 2004 and 2005 during which it claimed 11 outright wins.

And Jean-Joseph claimed championship glory for a second time when he won Europe’s top rallying prize driving a C2 S1600 in 2007, albeit without taking an overall win against the might of the Super 2000 cars that had come on stream by then.

ERC Greatest Car of the modern era explained
It’s not just the drivers who have starred since the FIA European Rally Championship calendar was streamlined into the format recognisable today.

Following that landmark moment in 2004, some of the greatest rally cars ever built have battled for glory in the various categories that continue to ensure the ERC remains as popular as it is relevant.

Fans can vote from a shortlist of 16 great ERC cars prepared by our team of experts. Employing bracketology, voting is available through the ERC’s social media channels with a 24-hour window to vote for each pairing. The winner will be announced on 4 December.

Included on the shortlist are the Ford Fiesta R5, the Hyundai i20 N Rally2, the Peugeot 208 T16, and many more.
